"Never liked it there." She groaned thinking about her tribe. She pulled her hair out her her ponytail and let it lay upon her shoulder. She pushed her bangs back with a swiff of her hand and sighed. "I just didn't wanna get married and that's all my mother could talk about. It w=just got so annoying, I had to leave." She told him.

"Fair enough. I can wholeheartedly support that," said Reubens, shrugging. Being from one of the more progressive tribes (tribe elders were just old men, for one thing) he'd never had much of a problem with overbearing parents. Overbearing friends, yes, parents no.

"What about you?" Octavia asked. She took a piece of her hair from her face and tucked it behind her ear. "Was your tribe in the desert...or up in the mountains?"
Her tribe was in the desert. Hottest place on earth and she had to live there 24/7. She liked Zationia. The climate was much cooler and more comfortable.

Reubens looked contemplative for a moment. "Sort of in the middle. We were in the foothills, and it was kinda nice. Sure, you found out about limestone pavements before you knew what everyone else thought they were, but it was pretty well rounded as places go," He smiled and looked into the middle distance "Me an' Chalky used to go sheep-tipping. Used to spend ages, and then there was the time he didn't see the cliff just as he shoved one," He smiled and laughed to himself. "No one could explain like ol' Chalky,"

"Foothills?" Octavia muttered to herself then remembered where they were. "Oh yeah...I remember where those are." She nodded. She reached back into her bag and pulled out a cigarette and a lighter. She put it in her mouth as she spotted Buck circling around her and Reubens.
She lit the cigarette up as she blew out a puff of smoke and listened to what Reubens was saying. "Sheep-tipping?" She laughed. her brothers used to do that when they were teenagers. They quickly grew out of it though. And the foothills were far away. Not an easy trip to and from the desert.

"Yup. It's harder to do than cows, since you can only do it while they're awake. Bring quiet boots and a long pole, that's my advice," He looked at Octavia, focussing briefly on her cigarette, then looked at the eagle. "Is that yours?" He asked, well aware of the answer, but it's nice to know that birds don't have anything personal against you.

Octavia nodded as she flicked her cigarette ashes to the ground. "Yeah, that's my eagle, Buck." She sighed. "Found him in the Celestial Forest while I was on a job assignment."
She could see Buck was coming down for a landing. Octavia quickly reached around put her armor on her other arm just as Buck planted his feet on her arm. "That's was close." She muttered as she took the cigarette out of her mouth and blew smoke in the air.

The eagle was a lot larger than it looked in the sky. Also a lot more detailed, the beak no longer just a point on the eagle, now it was actually a three-and-a-bit inch hollow eviscerating gouge which Reubens really didn't want to see any closer. "Crikey, you found him? Who adopted who here?" Shock had the unfortunate side-effect of making Reubens almost completely blind to tact.

Octavia nodded. "Yeah, he was a baby when I first got him. I think he fell out of the nest or something. He was stumbling on the forest floor when I picked him up." Octavia scratched his white fur on the top of his head. "He's really friendly and nice...at least with me." She shrugged. She carefully slipped the armor off her arm because Buck was starting to get heavy and placed the armor on the rock by her bag. Buck just stayed there and fluttered his wings from time to time.

Reubens looked sideways at the eagle. "It's funny, I keep on coming across the same stories, y'know?" He said, head still cocked to one side "I've heard of people finding all kinds of small animals as kids and growing up with them. You'd think there'd be more reasons than just compassion, eh?"

Octavia smiled as she rested her ha d on Buck's head. "Eh, we've been through some rough times. And he helps me alot while I'm working...so...I guess you could call it compassion." She shrugged.
"What about you? Got any pets?" She asked as she hoisted herself up onto the edge of the rock has her hair became looser in the ponytail. She groaned and just pulled her hair out of it. He hair never stayed in a damn ponytail.

"No-o, not as such. We used to keep a few sheep around, but they never lasted long, so not really," He took his own seat on the soft, mossy grass, making a faint 'mruw' noise "Hah, back home there wasn't much on a sheep you couldn't eat. Even bones," Alright, so maybe it tasted a bit like eating attic dust, but hey.

Octavia breathed in another breath of smoke as she sat on the rock and Reubens sat down also. Octavia laughed when he mentioned the sheep. It reminded her of her brothers. She missed them alot, but she wasn't going back there.
"So, what's your story?" Octavia wondered. She knew he wasn't with his tribe anymore. She wasn't exactly sure why.

"Well, y'know how a lot of people leave home? Weell, me an' Chalky decided to go earn a living somewhere else. We got caught up in the weaseliest little fight you've ever seen and Chalky got shot. Poor bugger, he was trying to solidify to protect himself when a stray round went through his soft little head. I've still got his fingers, somewhere..." He took eight white sticks out of his pocket. They looked like any other blackboard chalk sticks, except for tiny details, like the fingernails still slightly visible, and the rubbed knuckles.

"Whoa." Octavia murmured when Reubens pulled out the fingers. She kinda cringed. She jumped when Buck took off into the sky after another bird and set the armor soaring to the ground. She moaned and pushed off the rock. She picked up the armor as she slumped against the rock staring at the fingers.
"How long have you been carrying these around?" Octavia ask.d Still somewhat shocked.

"Coupla years," He said nonchalantly, rolling what was presumably the middle finger between his digits "I just needed something to remind me why I'm doing this, and it's not like Chalky'll need 'em any more. I daresay already he's just an oddly shaped piece of chalk strata with some intriguing fossils in it,"

Octavia was kinda shocked the Reubens had been carrying these fingers around. He didn't seem like a guy that cared that much. Just another one of those lame reporters with no life but...he wasn't like that at all.
"No... I don't think he would need 'em anymore." She chuckled. Octavia lifted her head and didn't' see the sun anymore. It was just a dark navy blue now. She couldn't see Buck anywhere though. "Aw, hell..." She sighed. She bounced back up as she started to pace around the perimeter where the had been sitting. Studying the sky. "Where the hell did he go?" She asked. She started to walk along he wall looking for him.

Reubens sat up and, due to one of those little quirks of human (ish) nature, glanced around, as though this would suffice. "I daresay he knows what he's doing," He said "And animals know which side their bread's buttered on. I shouldn't worry,"

"I know.," Octavia said as she ran her fingers through her sleek hair. "Buck just usually stays close to me...it isn't like him to fly off like this." She shrugged. she started to walked further. She looked back at Reubens.
"......I guess he'll be okay." She shrugged and turned on her heel back to where her things where.

"Of course he'll be fine," Said Reubens "He's a ruddy great eagle. I don' think they have to deal with much in the way of predators," He'd seen what buzzards could do to a lamb, and an eagle was nothing if not a giant buzzard with attitude.
