IN THE BEGINNING......
Pern had seemed like the perfect place. Until thread fell life was running smoothly. And then the settlers experienced the deadly silver rain. Thanks to people like Kitti Ping and her daughter Wind Blossom the settlers were saved by the engineering of the magnificent dragons.
Life and the turns passed. The Dragons thrived, and people knew they had a way to survive. They did, building up a society that was strong and stable. But these facts are well known now, the history of Pern is taught at Landing. The site of the original settlement and now home to the marvel that is AIVAS and the College that built up around that marvellous find.
RECENT EVENTS
But now, 1000 turns after AIVAS was discovered a new threat has emerged. An illness, wiping out the dragons so fast that the Healers and Doctors have no chance of saving them. The great beasts have died fast and left a grieving world. Luckily the Red Star had been sent away by the courageous efforts of many dragon riders turns ago. Just as well, less than 20 dragons now survive.
But rumours have risen that the Red Star is returning, that Pern will once more face its old threat. Without any dragons to combat this menace the people fear the worst. Until some Doctors and Scientists search the records of AIVAS. The machine is failing, its data corrupted, with the final days looming the information regarding engineering the dragons has been found. Five people are tasked with exploring this path. Is it possible to do now as it was then. Even though they do not have the equipment and know how.
But along with the copious notes they find a reference to a secret place. A laboratory hidden in a range of mountains. Placed there in case they ever needed it.
And now they did.
Using the last of the dragons who had yet to fall ill they searched the mountains indicated. And sure enough they found a highly technical laboratory. In fact they found a self contained Weyr and Hold in one. The Weyrhold was cut into the mountains, and the explorers were amazed at the facilities they found.
They searched the numerous caves and rooms finding things they had no idea what they were. There was electricity powered from somewhere, lights and heating ran into the heart of the Weyrhold and then came the greatest find. A room that was locked and dimly lit. Curious people stared through the small window in the door, inside there were objects, things that looked suspiciously like dragon eggs. But the door remained locked. The mystery wasnt solved yet.
Investigating further the Doctors and Scientists had to draw on all they had learnt from AIVAS. They found a large, well lit and ventilated room that had banks of computers. Sitting at these amazing machines the Doctors and researchers were taught about this Weyrhold, that the original settlers had placed this place here for times of emergency. They explained how the 18 eggs were sitting in a frozen environment, that they were carefully monitored waiting to be reanimated.
The Researchers and Doctors had never heard anything like this, it was way beyond their experience. They read further and found that a clutch of the fabled Fire Lizards, nick named 'flitters' were placed in a nearby room, 18 eggs again awaited instructions and they would be hatched within a seven day of them being discovered. The dragon eggs would take four sevendays to hatch. There was a list of things that needed to be done before the eggs would be reanimated. Things like making the Weyrhold home, bringing people into run and live at this purpose built facility. There were exciting finds waiting to be discovered. There was a third room, 6 eggs lay in there, the reports said a new Wher would emerge from these. They wouldnt know until it happened.
Over the next sevendays people arrived at the Weyrhold. The Scientists began studying what they could, and the place was soon a place of excitement. People moved around exploring, children ran and shouted through the once lifeless caves. Slowly the caves came to life. It was then heard the last of the dragons had succumbed to the illness. Fears were raised about the risk to these new ones. More work was done on the notes and it was discovered they were a new breed of dragon. Sturdier, larger, and with even better immunity. Most had no idea what this meant, as far as they were aware Pern was safe. Dragons would once more be seen. But still the eggs sat waiting...
